December 14, 2020 (Total Solar Eclipse):
This was the only total solar eclipse of 2020. It was unique because it occurred close to the Southern Hemisphere's summer solstice, and its path of totality crossed southern Chile and Argentina. Coincidentally, a comet belonging to the Kreutz sungrazer family appeared during the eclipse, a rare additional celestial event for observers
December 4, 2021 (The total solar eclipse)
was unique for several reasons related to its location and the unusual direction of the Moon's shadow.
Exclusive to Antarctica: The path of totality was almost entirely over the remote continent of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, making it inaccessible to most people on Earth. Very few people (mostly scientists and a small number of tourists on specialized cruises or flights) witnessed the event from the ground.
